She currently specializes in seeing ages 13 to 65. Tatiana currently resides in Miami, Florida but is excited to provide us telehealth care in Arizona. BIPOC Mental Health Tatiana is passionate about working with and providing quality care to people of color. LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Taitana holds a strong understanding and passion for treating members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Anxiety It is no secret that seeking psychiatric care is anxiety-provoking (when you already have anxiety), but Tatiana is a calming, non-judgmental presence who serves as an expert in anxiety medication. Q&A What is your favorite movie? Avengers: Infinity War (made me happy cry at one point), the Harry Potter Series (read all the books too), anything X-men, of course the Jurassic Park movies, and Finding Dory because I experienced so many emotions when I watched it. I’m also a BIG fan of horror films. The Exorcism of Emily Rose and As Above So Below are probably my faves. Favorite superhero: Hmmm… Does El from Stranger Things count? I’d also say Storm and Spiderman. If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? Either have the ability to travel to other dimensions (because maybe things are better elsewhere) or have the ability to replicate myself and others (like Hermoine did) so we can be in multiple places at once. Favorite bands/singer? I’d say my favorite artists are SZA, Moliy, Amaarae, Tobi Lou, Alina Baraz, Drake, and KYLE. I also LOVE reggaeton. I like listening to Rauw Alejandro, Karol G, Sech, Jhay Cortez, and of course Bad Bunny. If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? First and foremost, I’d wish for a world where everyone was safe, happy, food and shelter were a human right/free, everyone was caring and accepting and looked out for one another, and capitalism didn’t exist… 2. To have the means to give my family everything they deserve (especially my mom) ♥️ 3. To see (and potentially pet) all the cute/cool animals in the world. What is your favorite food? I’m Colombian and Salvadoran. Our food is amazing (e.g. empanadas, arepas, tamales, pupusas). Oh wait, I just thought of another. I used to have 2 chickens as pets. We called one of them chicken parm… Tell us about your pets. I have 2 fur babies, Kitty aka Mamow and JJ. Kitty is 13 years old, and my family has had her since she was a teeny tiny kitten that fit in the palm of my hand. Her original name is Kitty, but we used to call her “mi amor” which later merged into “Mamow”. I now mostly call her “Mamow”. JJ (original name Junior Junior) is 6 years old and one of Mamow’s babies. He’s a big softy. But Mamow? Not so much. What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? Recognizing that mental health conditions don’t exist in a vacuum. Trauma, the social and political climate, financial insecurity, medical problems, and a number of other things can all impact mental health. To me it’s so important to always explore and understand the context in which someone is experiencing life. I also strongly believe that various forms of oppression (racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc.) can contribute to the onset of a new psychiatric condition or exacerbate an existing condition. In my opinion this needs to be recognized and acknowledged more in the field of mental health/psychiatry. What are your thoughts about treating adult ADHD? I think it’s entirely possible that ADHD went undetected and/or untreated in childhood and now is more of an issue for someone as an adult. With further assessment, I’m definitely open to treating adult ADHD. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? I believe it’s my responsibility to provide as much education about the psychiatric condition(s) and medication(s) as I can for us to then have a conversation about treatment. You know better than anyone else what your experience is and what your goals are. My goal is that we come up with a treatment plan together that is appropriate and doable, whether that includes medications or not. I think medications can be lifelong, but they definitely don’t have to be. It varies person to person. What are other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications? Support. And this can look like a lot of different things. Financial support, therapy, an open ear, skills teaching, school support, childcare, a solid support system, and so many other things. But ultimately, medications unfortunately won’t solve everything. Support is just as important, if not more. Talk to us about your experience working with trauma and dissociative disorders: As a registered nurse, I worked on a unit that provided treatment to patients with extensive trauma histories. Our patients typically presented with depression, PTSD, dissociation, and/or Borderline Personality Disorder. Given the current state of the world, our patients were usually cis-women and folks who identified with the LGBTQIA+ community. Life can sometimes be really hard and really unfair. I get that. My goal was to always do my best to create a welcoming, safe, genuine, and compassionate environment. With this as the foundation, there is a lot we can begin to tackle. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are opening to sharing? I always thought I was just shy and introverted but turns out I actually have social anxiety (LOL). I’ve also experienced different types of trauma throughout my life and that was really hard… but here I am alive and well, and in a place to meet you. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? That it’s your decision whether to share or not, and how much or how little. These can be really tough topics and they can bring up a lot of different thoughts and emotions. If you want to hold off on sharing until down the road, that’s cool with me too. Just know that if/when you do decide to share, I’m not judging you for your experience. I’m here to support you.

- Melody Martinez, PMHNP-BC | Perinatal & Trauma-Informed Psychiatric Care | Paperflower Psychiatry
Meet Melody Martinez, PMHNP-BC, a Tucson-based psychiatric nurse practitioner offering compassionate care with a focus on perinatal mental health, trauma, and holistic treatment approaches. Now accepting new patients for in-person and telehealth services. Melody Martinez, MSN, PMHNP-BC Hi! I’m Melody Martinez, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), dedicated to providing compassionate care across the lifespan. Proudly rooted in Tucson, Arizona, my journey from educator to nurse practitioner has been enriched by a diverse range of experiences, each contributing to my holistic approach to mental health care. My professional journey began with a bachelors degree in education from the University of Arizona, where I specialized in family studies and human development. This foundational education instilled in me a deep understanding of the complexities of human behavior and relationships. Driven by a passion for healthcare and inspired by the profound impact of supporting individuals across various life stages and backgrounds, I transitioned into the field of nursing. After earning my Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Arizona, I dedicated several years to providing specialized care to women and infants, honing my skills in nurturing and supporting the unique needs of this population. Motivated by a desire to expand my scope of practice and make a broader impact on mental health care, I pursued advanced training as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Today, at Paperflower Psychiatry I blend my diverse background in education, nursing, and perinatal care to offer holistic, evidence-based mental health care to individuals seeking support for their mental health concerns. Believing in the benefits of medication, I also incorporate alternative and complementary treatments to address concerns, individualizing each patient's care. My approach is science-backed and empathetically driven. I enjoy including therapy techniques in my sessions when appropriate, to provide comprehensive and personalized care. As a mother of two, I understand the importance of flexibility in scheduling appointments, and I am happy to offer weekend, early morning and evening availability both in person at our new Tucson location and via tele-health sessions. Beyond my professional pursuits, I find joy in exploring new cultures and perspectives through travel. Having lived abroad in various countries, I've cultivated a deep appreciation for diversity and the richness of human experience. My family, which includes my two adventurous sons, holds a special place in my heart. We bond and create enduring memories during our camping trips in the great outdoors. Their unwavering love and support inspire me to make a positive impact in the lives of others, both within my practice and beyond. I am honored to be a part of your healing journey and look forward to supporting you every step of theway. Perinatal Mental Health Melody has extensive experience as a labor and delivery nurse and is passionate about offering safe options for medications during pregnancy and postpartum. Foster Care/Adoption Melody understands adoption and foster care as a traumatic experience as well as the flaws of the system. Anxiety Anxiety can be tough to manage and verbalize - Melody offers excellent options for medication management in cases of high anxiety. Q&A Favorite movie: This is such a difficult question because my first instinct is to write a top 10 list. If I had to choose a favorite based on how many times I have watched it, it would probably be Spirited Away because it's an absolute feast for the senses! The animation is stunning, and the food looks absolutely delicious—I mean, who wouldn't want to taste those mouthwatering dishes from the spirit world? Plus, I'm a huge fan of all of Hayao Miyazaki's films and accompanying soundtracks. Beyond the scrumptious visuals, the story of growth and the healing powers of love are so heartwarming. I love the transformation from a scared little girl to a confident hero while navigating the whimsical and sometimes downright bizarre world of spirits. Favorite superhero: I am not a huge superhero buff but I think I would say Batman, even though it might seem really mainstream. I just feel like despite not possessing superhuman abilities, his dedication to justice and his unwavering commitment to protecting his city make him a true hero. His resilience and determination to overcome his own darkness and trauma, channeling it into a force for good is inspiring. I think we can see it as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can find the courage to make a difference in the world. Plus, the movies are really cinematically pleasing! The complex and captivating villains add such a depth to his story. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? If I could have any superpower, I would choose the ability to manipulate matter at the atomic level, much like Atom Eve from the comic series "Invincible." With this power, I could reshape the world around me, transforming objects, creating life-saving medicines, or even altering the fabric of reality itself. The ability to manipulate atoms would give me unparalleled control over the physical universe, allowing me to solve problems, heal wounds, and bring about positive change on a grand scale. It's a power limited only by imagination and ethical considerations, making it both awe-inspiring and profoundly impactful. Favorite bands/singer/music: Music is all about the feelings it creates, so I just go with the flow and let the music take me on a journey through memories and emotions. My taste in music is a bit of a mishmash, but that's what makes it so special! I can always enjoy Indie music from bands like The Strokes, The Killers, and Modest Mouse. But then there is the Dixie Chicks, whose music takes me back to those carefree days of childhood, riding in the car with my mom, her hair blowing in the wind as we sang along with the same CD over and over again. Fleetwood Mac holds a special place in my heart as my ultimate favorite band and soundtrack to my soul. Whenever karaoke is on the table I will be there belting out "Gold Dust Women" with my friends, laughing and singing our hearts out. And when it's time to tackle chores around the house, you can bet I've got the Bluey soundtrack blasting, with my little one dancing around and making a mess behind me. Music is about the memories they bring back and the moments they create, weaving through the fabric of my life and adding color to every day. If you could have three wishes, what would they be? 1. To travel a peaceful world with my loved ones, exploring new cultures, tasting exotic foods, and making unforgettable memories together. 2. To have the ability to speak every language fluently, allowing me to connect with people from all walks of life and forge meaningful relationships wherever I go. 3. To foster a world where every child grows up in a nurturing and supportive environment, free from trauma and adversity; feeling loved, valued, and empowered to chase their dreams. Tell us one fun fact about yourself: One fun fact about me is that I'm passionate about travel and adventure and I find solace in nature. One of the most memorable experiences I've had was attending the Dalai Lama's 80th birthday celebration in India. Another unforgettable journey I embarked on was hitchhiking from Tanzania to Namibia with nothing but a backpack and a tent. It was a remarkable adventure filled with unforgettable sights, fascinating encounters, and a profound sense of freedom! My favorite quote from the trip is, “you can’t camp here, the lions will carry you away in the night.” Tell us about your pets: We welcomed a rescue dog into our family named Juneau. He's been such a blessing and has quickly become a beloved member of our household. Juneau is incredibly sweet and has a gentle disposition, making him the perfect companion for our family, especially with my two young sons. He's always ready for playtime or cuddles, and his loving nature brings so much joy into our lives. We had a dog years ago named Piper but due to her trauma history she needed constant companionship and we could not have two dogs at the time so she went to live with my close friend. I still see her often and she spends every other weekend with Juneau. I am so happy they get to be friends! What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? My passion for perinatal mental health runs deep. Through personal experiences with postpartum depression and anxiety, combined with years of working as an antepartum and postpartum nurse, I've gained invaluable insights into the unique challenges of pregnancy and postpartum. I firmly believe that everyone deserves support during this journey, whether they're basking in the joys of motherhood or grappling with anxiety and depression. I'm committed to destigmatizing mental health conversations in the perinatal period and advocating for accessible support services. This cause is close to my heart, and I'm dedicated to making a positive impact for individuals and families. Let's banish mom guilt and shaming once and for all! What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? Medication can be a valuable tool in managing mental health conditions, but it's not the only solution. I believe in a holistic approach that combines medication with therapy, lifestyle changes, and social support. Maybe medication is right for you or maybe you would benefit from forest bathing or wilderness therapy or acupuncture. There are many paths, lets figure out which one is right for you. Whether medication is lifelong depends on the individual and their unique circumstances. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? I want patients to know that it's okay to feel nervous or apprehensive about discussing tough topics like trauma or abuse and that they can set the pace that they feel comfortable with. Our sessions are a safe and non-judgmental space where they can express themselves openly, and I'm here to support and guide them through the process with compassion and empathy. Tell us your thoughts about the current state of the foster care system. I have seen firsthand both the strengths and shortcomings of the foster system. While there are dedicated individuals working tirelessly to support foster youth, there's a clear need for improvement, particularly in ensuring a smoother transition into adulthood with adequate support and resources. What are other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications? I am a big believer in natures almost magical ability to heal and restore! Spending time outdoors can offer a sense of peace and tranquility that can alleviate stress and improve mood. Practices such as therapy, mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and social connection also play important roles in promoting mental well-being. I believe it is essential to address mental health from a holistic perspective that considers the various factors influencing an individual's experience. Tell us about the intersection between your experience in Women and Infant care and/or teaching + mental health? My experience in both teaching and women and infant care has given me a unique perspective on the intersection of education and mental health. As a former teacher for 8 years, I've honed my skills in communicating with children in a comfortable and supportive manner. My background in education, with a focus on family studies and human development, has equipped me with valuable insights into the developmental needs of children and families. Transitioning to a role as an antepartum and postpartum nurse, I found that my teaching experience allowed me to better prepare individuals for the profound changes of parenthood. I understand the importance of providing comprehensive support and education to expectant and new parents, not only in terms of physical health but also in addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood. My ability to advocate for children and families, coupled with my knowledge of child development and maternal health, allows me to approach mental health issues in a holistic and empathetic manner. I believe in the power of education, communication, and support in promoting mental well-being for individuals and families throughout the perinatal and early childhood stages.

- Meet Maria Ingalla, DNP, PMHNP-BC | Psychiatric Care in Arizona
Discover the leader behind Paperflower Psychiatry. Meet Dr. Maria Ingalla, DNP, PMHNP-BC providing expert mental health education and content creation. Dr. Maria Ingalla, DNP, PMHNP-BC Maria Ingalla, a certified nurse practitioner specializing in family psychiatric mental health, brings a wealth of experience in mental health from years working in community mental health agencies throughout the Valley. She frequently was argumentative with leadership over poor quality of care and the "pill mill" ideology that these companies depended on for money . After some unexpected exits from these past jobs (let's call them unplanned career detours), Maria decided it was time to start a company that had openly progressive values and focused on patients instead of dollars. Maria specializes in providing compassionate care for mental health challenges during the perinatal period. After her daughter suffered from serotonin syndrome from breastfeeding, she became an advocatefor educating others on recognizing serotonin syndrome in breastfeeding infants. In her previous role as a nursing instructor at Arizona State University, Maria taught pharmacology and mental health courses to nursing students in Bachelor's and Master's programs. Her dedication to education was recognized with a Daisy Award nomination for excellent faculty in Spring 2022. Maria has also made valuable contributions to the academic community at Aspen University. She continues mental health education to the general public on her Tik Tok account: @dr.mariaingalla Maria's extensive experience as a psychiatric consultant spans nationwide collaboration with pediatricians, primary care doctors, and OB/GYNs, focusing on the holistic management of mental health for complex patients. Her commitment to providing high-quality mental health care is evident in her multifaceted contributions to the field. Maria remains an advocate for social justice, and equity within the mental health system. Maria now mentors new graduates with similar ideologies to be your excellent practitioners within Paperflower. She is currently working on ways to continue educating new graduate nurse practitioners and the general public on psychiatry. Maria currently lives with her husband, two daughters, two dogs, Marshmallow and Potato. She used to enjoy a lot of things but let's be honest, now she's a mom and she doesn't have much of a life besides chasing around two small children. Contact: maria@paperflowerpsychiatry.com Mentorship As the owner of the practice, Maria ensures that she remains accessible to all of her practitioners to help them grow professionally. Education Maria currently develops continuing education programs for professionals as well as offering education for the general public via her podcast & social media. - Jonathan Frank, PMHNP-BC | Adult ADHD & LGBTQ+ Psychiatric Care | Paperflower Psychiatry
Jonathan Frank, PMHNP-BC, provides compassionate psychiatric care specializing in adult ADHD, mood disorders, and LGBTQ+ mental health. Offering patient-centered therapy and medication management for adults in Phoenix, AZ. Now accepting new patients. Jonathan Frank, MSN PMHNP-BC Gay, chill (on the outside), and running on a delicate cocktail of anxiety and ADHD—so yes, I will forget what I was saying mid-sentence, but I’ll remember a random fact about peppers forever. Drummer by trade and/or compulsion, because hitting things rhythmically is cheaper than therapy (except I also believe in therapy… thanks to my dogs). I play in a metal band called Hill Giant Witch. Speaking of dogs: proud servant to two huskies who are therapy dogs, which means they calm other people while screaming at ghosts and sirens at home. I grow hot peppers—lots of them—because I enjoy pain, flavor, and confusing my digestive system. Atheist, but spiritually connected to good music (emo and metal), spicy food, and naps. Generally easygoing, occasionally overwhelmed, always trying my best. If I’m not drumming, farming peppers, or being pulled down the street by huskies, I’m probably overthinking something that absolutely does not matter. Chill vibes, loud drums, spicy peppers, anxious energy, zero gods.. welcome to the brand. Note from Maria/the owner: in case you're wondering what kind of provider jon is.. jon once was so angry at a pharmacist for not filling a prescription for a patient that he drove to the pharmacy himself to yell at the pharmacy and sit there until the prescription was filled. he's truly an advocate who cares. Forensic Psychiatry Jon can also be found working at the Arizona State Hospital. Although he's specialized in the forensic population there, he's also just a giant teddy bear who low key prefers working with some anxiety + depression <3 Bipolar & ADHD Jon has spent a large part of his career working to understand and treat bipolar disorder, ADHD, and to truly understand the intersection when both of these exist. Psychosis If you've experienced or are experiencing psychosis through depression, bipolar, schizoaffective or another disorder, Jon is the most equipped to help with years of experience. Q&A What is your favorite movie? That is a difficult one as I have quite a few. The Crow, SLC Punk, Inception, and The Burbs Favorite superhero? Wolverine. If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? Teleportation. With this power, I would never work again. Favorite bands/singer? Deftones, Sleeping with Sirens, Pierce the Veil, The Used, Blink-182, AFI, The Ataris, Bring Me the Horizon. If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? 1. I’d wish all wishes I thought of would want to come true. 2. To understand animals. 3. To have superpowers Fun fact about you: I have more aluminum in my body than most people do. I am injury prone. I find comedy in everything…trauma history. Tell me about your pets Jedda and Koda are my babies. They are such calm, sweet, and loving girls. They are trained therapy dogs and love meeting new people. They absolutely hate sirens and make sure everyone knows when they hear one. Both the girls are very bonded, which means they are always in eye-sight of one another. They are so nice to each other, one can take a treat right out of the others mouth and no fighting or growling occurs. I’m not kidding. They are my life savers and I am forever grateful for their love and companionship. What are ways beyond medication that can improve your mental health? Music. Music is in every aspect of my life. Ask my husband and he will tell you I sing a song about EVERYTHING. A commercial comes on, I take a sentence and sing it. I’ve played several instruments in my life, however, drums are my favorite. When I was 17 years old, my friend and I were offered an indie label contract for our punk rock band, Stag. We turned it down to go to college. I can only wonder what would have happened had we taken it. Music gives me peace and helps me focus What are your thoughts on adult ADHD? I was not diagnosed with ADHD until I was 26 years old, while in nursing school. Being treated for it was life changing. Had I been treated as a kid, I would not be here, I’d be terraforming Mars. Treating adults with ADHD is something I am passionate about. The hard part with adults is differentiating ADHD with other mental health disorders that share commonalities…this is where I come in If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? I am just as nervous as you are. Does not matter if it is the 1 millionth evaluation, I am still nervous. We will make it through this together. Hahahaha (nervous laugh). On a serious note, these are nerve racking because you are answering questions you may have not been asked before. It takes a lot of trust to be able to feel comfortable. That trust doesn’t happen immediately, but grows over time. Traumatic events affect everyone differently, but they DO affect everyone. I am an ear to listen to what you want to talk about. I never push, but leave the “door open” for you. What are some other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications? Therapy is a huge component of healing and gaining control of your mental health. Therapy, I believe, is 50% of the treatment. When medication is warranted, in combination with therapy, the result is amazing. Medications can alleviate quickly, but they can be a bandaid, therapy is where the healing occurs. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? Does a patient who sees you HAVE to be on medications? That comes down to the mental health disorder. I have to be on medications fo lyfe. That can be hard to stomach for some people, but I believe that comes from the negative stigma with medication and psychiatry. I look at medications as a tool is your mental health tool box, along side therapy. In some mental health disorders, medication may not be for life. That is something we would talk about and work through. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? I have mental health disorders. I used to say “suffer from”, but I feel that mindset lends to the negative view of mental health. I embrace it and own it. Ask me about it. Sometimes when you know other people think and feel the similar to you, you feel the world is not as small as it was before. You’re not alone. What are some experiences you have had that make you unique? When working in the ED (Emergency Department), I saw how people with a mental health disorder were treated and I felt that I wanted to make a difference. I felt the dignity and respect were absent in the ED and I wanted to make sure I restored that for everyone who struggles at times. We all have dark moments, but we should never be made to feel bad or guilty for them. Always reach out…ask Delfina, she has had to listen to me sob on the phone because I was so sad. But she walked me through it, then Maria called and told me to suck it up. Lol.
