  • Meet Maria Ingalla, DNP, PMHNP-BC | Psychiatric Care in Arizona

Discover the leader behind Paperflower Psychiatry. Meet Dr. Maria Ingalla, DNP, PMHNP-BC providing expert mental health education and content creation. Dr. Maria Ingalla, DNP, PMHNP-BC Maria Ingalla, a certified nurse practitioner specializing in family psychiatric mental health, brings a wealth of experience in mental health from years working in community mental health agencies throughout the Valley. She frequently was argumentative with leadership over poor quality of care and the "pill mill" ideology that these companies depended on for money . After some unexpected exits from these past jobs (let's call them unplanned career detours), Maria decided it was time to start a company that had openly progressive values and focused on patients instead of dollars. Maria specializes in providing compassionate care for mental health challenges during the perinatal period. After her daughter suffered from serotonin syndrome from breastfeeding, she became an advocatefor educating others on recognizing serotonin syndrome in breastfeeding infants. In her previous role as a nursing instructor at Arizona State University, Maria taught pharmacology and mental health courses to nursing students in Bachelor's and Master's programs. Her dedication to education was recognized with a Daisy Award nomination for excellent faculty in Spring 2022. Maria has also made valuable contributions to the academic community at Aspen University. She continues mental health education to the general public on her Tik Tok account: @dr.mariaingalla Maria's extensive experience as a psychiatric consultant spans nationwide collaboration with pediatricians, primary care doctors, and OB/GYNs, focusing on the holistic management of mental health for complex patients. Her commitment to providing high-quality mental health care is evident in her multifaceted contributions to the field. Maria remains an advocate for social justice, and equity within the mental health system. Maria now mentors new graduates with similar ideologies to be your excellent practitioners within Paperflower. She is currently working on ways to continue educating new graduate nurse practitioners and the general public on psychiatry. Maria currently lives with her husband, two daughters, two dogs, Marshmallow and Potato. She used to enjoy a lot of things but let's be honest, now she's a mom and she doesn't have much of a life besides chasing around two small children. Contact: maria@paperflowerpsychiatry.com Mentorship As the owner of the practice, Maria ensures that she remains accessible to all of her practitioners to help them grow professionally. Education Maria currently develops continuing education programs for professionals as well as offering education for the general public via her podcast & social media. Child Psychiatry Maria is passionate about neurodivergence and child psychiatry -- previously before running Paperflower, she spent years managing medications in community mental health. "Maria and her students are wonderful. They are fully invested in your health and show that they care in many ways. Our chats are always very informative and the solutions they find are truly life-changing." "Maria has been my sons doctor for over 5 years. We followed her when she opened her own practice. She is so kind and truly understands how to help her patients. I highly recommend paper flower psychiatry." "I never thought my search for the right doctor would end. Then I found Maria. Dr. Maria completely changed my life in the most positive way. I knew she was genuine from the moment she first saw me. She spent so long listening to all my concerns, talking through every detail and I finally feel like myself again. I truly don't know how to thank her. I would highly recommend Maria to anyone seeking a doctor they will actually love and fully trust with their mental health." "Maria is the BEST! She listens and asks insightful questions. She really develops a connection with her patients and offers valuable suggestions to meet their needs. Thank you for caring for my daughter and developing solutions instead of just writing prescriptions!"

  • Tabitha Arey, PMHNP-BC | Trauma-Informed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner | Paperflower Psychiatry

Tabitha Arey, PMHNP-BC, offers trauma-informed psychiatric care at Paperflower Psychiatry. Specializing in mental health for children, teens, and adults, including foster care and substance use disorders. Now accepting new patients across Arizona. Tabitha Arey, MSN, PMHNP-BC Tabitha is a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with experience working with kids and teens in the foster care system, adults experiencing substance use disorders, and patients in the Trauma/Neuro ICU and COVID ICU experiencing extreme mental and physical trauma and loss. These experiences have affirmed her passion for mental health care and obsession with the fascinating and resilient nature of the human brain and people’s ability to overcome adversity. She also just generally enjoys helping others find ways to effectively cope with the bittersweetness of living, parenting, and experiencing joy in today’s social, environmental, and political climate. Her two small humans and two rescue pups keep her on her toes and provide plenty of laughter and chaos on the daily. We can confirm she has a dark sense of humor, dislikes talking about herself and will vibe with you if you're socially awkward. Neurodivergence Tabitha offers neurodivergence evaluations for autism and ADHD -- and she is an incredibly affirming presence even if you choose to go the self diagnosis route. Ketamine Tabitha will be offering Ketamine evaluations and IM administration at our Tempe location on select days. Substance Use Finding a provider who thoroughly understands and can not be judgmental in terms of treating co-existing substance use disorders can be difficult - but Tabitha is definitely your person for this. Q&A What is your favorite movie? I’m more of a TV show person, but favorite movies would include Star Wars, Avatar, and Interstellar. Favorite Superhero: Deadpool – simply for the laughs and dark humor. But Dr. Strange and Gamora are close runner ups since they are smart and badass and whatnot. If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? Time travel – pretty sure I would thrive as a cavewoman. Favorite bands/singer? I am unapologetically a product of the 90’s, so my taste in music is all over the place – some faves include Radiohead, Blink-182, Jack Johnson, or any 90’s hip hop. If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? to live right next to a mountain so I could hike every day, an end to fighting/war in the name of religion, and free health care for all. Tell me a fun fact about yourself: If I had to choose another career, I’d be a marine biologist. I’ve been a scuba instructor since my early 20’s and I’m lowkey obsessed with the weird creatures in the ocean (octopus, jellyfish, nudibranchs) and love diving with sharks. Tell us about your pets: I have 2 rescue doggos. The grumpy old lady Zoe is an 11-year-old Chi-weenie who weighs 9lbs and is [obviously] the alpha. The big ol’ doofus Lincoln is a 6-year-old heeler/pitbull/dalmatian mix with tall/skinny legs, which makes him resemble an AT-AT robot from Star Wars. What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? : I mean – all of it. But if I have to pick one thing it would be ending stigma. We have come a long way, but there’s still so much shame and secrecy surrounding mental illness. Stigma just perpetuates and compounds the problems experienced by people with a mental health diagnosis. Being able to openly share and seek help without fear of judgment is the best way to realize we’re all human and we’re in this together. What are your thoughts about treating adult ADHD?: I think treatment depends on how it affects your everyday life, which can vary greatly from person to person. Being diagnosed in adulthood is becoming more common as we begin to understand how people (especially women) adapt, compensate, and mask symptoms of neurodivergence from an early age and may not match textbook definitions. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? You certainly don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to. It does help to have a clear picture of your history to differentiate between symptoms of trauma and other diagnoses; however, this is entirely up to you if you wish to share or not. I will ask in a general way, and you can give as much or as little info as you want. I have plenty of personal and professional experience with processing traumatic events, so you don’t have to feel alone in your tough experiences ever. What are other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications?: I’m a big advocate for therapy, especially if you find a therapist you vibe with and can be completely honest with. There’s also so much research supporting the effects of nutrition, exercise, sleep, and sunlight on mental health, so despite them being almost everyone’s least favorite solution – they can be a game changer. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? : Medication for mental health can be lifesaving – I have no doubt about this. However, I understand why a person may be hesitant to try this option due to many factors, such as side effects, stigma, and general misconceptions about some meds. I do think there are many ways to approach mental health treatment and medications are only one potential piece of the puzzle. I believe medications can, in most cases, support a struggling individual in a way that allows them to not have to spend so much energy just to keep their head above water. As a result, they can instead use that energy to engage in therapy and/or other services that can help complete that mental health care puzzle and lead to more long-term solutions. The duration of medication for mental health depends entirely on the risk versus benefit for each person, and it is ultimately your choice if you decide medications aren’t right for you for any reason. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? sharing? I have definitely had my own experiences in mental health care throughout my life, and that is a part of what led me to this field. I think that making it through the things I’ve made it through has solidified my belief that anyone can persevere and thrive despite any setback, adversity, or shitty situation. Tell us about the intersection between your experience in the neuro ICU and psychiatry?: Neuro ICU taught me so much about how even just the smallest of changes in our brains can alter so many aspects of everyday lives including language, balance, memory, learning, motor function – everything. It was also a place where many people were experiencing the worst days of their lives at a young age due to head trauma, strokes, and other similar things. This environment nudged me into having the absolute honor of holding parent’s/spouse’s/children’s hands while guiding them through the devastating process of unexpected loss, giving me the constant reminder that there are only 2 guarantees in life: birth and death; everything in between is what we make of it. Taking care of our meat suits – especially the noggin portion can make our time here more enjoyable.

We're here to help you navigate it with knowledge, safety, and respect. About Services Schedule now John Greeley Lead Integration Specialist & Wellness Guide Offering preparation and integration support for clients exploring altered states of consciousness. I’m John Greeley, a certified life coach with over 15 years of experience supporting people through periods of transition, growth, and deep inner work utilizing consciousness altering compounds and techniques. My path into this work was shaped by a lifelong fascination with human consciousness and a personal belief that healing and transformation are not linear — they are cyclical, layered, and deeply individual. I created this practice because I saw a gap: people were having powerful experiences with psychedelics, cannabis, and other altered states — sometimes legally, sometimes underground — but often with little to no support before or after. These experiences can be profound, but without proper preparation or integration, their potential is often lost, or worse, becomes confusing or destabilizing. My role isn’t to facilitate or promote substance use — it’s to support people who are choosing these paths to do so with mindfulness, safety, and clarity. Whether someone is exploring cannabis for anxiety, preparing for a legal psychedelic retreat, navigating ketamine-assisted therapy, or working to change a difficult relationship with cannabis, I’m here to help create space for honest reflection, practical tools, and lasting insight. I bring a harm reduction lens to everything I do, meaning I honor your autonomy and meet you exactly where you are — without judgment, dogma, or an agenda. My work integrates elements of mindfulness, somatic awareness, behavioral psychology, and emotional resilience. I also have a particular interest in supporting clients through cannabis use disorder and conscious cannabis practices, as I’ve seen both the benefits and the complexities of this plant in real lives. At my core, I believe that every altered state — whether expansive or difficult — has the potential to teach us something. My job is to help you make sense of it, integrate what matters, and move forward with intention. My interest in consciousness has always been more than academic — it's been deeply personal. Over the years, that curiosity led me to explore a variety of altered states through plants, fungi, synthetic compounds, and traditional techniques. One particular experience profoundly reshaped the trajectory of my life. To say it “changed” me would be an understatement — it dismantled long-held beliefs, dissolved certain fears, and initiated a radical shift in how I relate to myself, others, and this ongoing journey we call life. But what truly impacted me wasn’t just the experience itself — it was the integration that followed. Months of inner work, reflection, and reorientation taught me that insight means little without the time and tools to embody it. That realization became the foundation for the work I do now: helping others prepare for, navigate, and integrate their own transformational moments with care, safety, and clarity. About John I’m most at peace in wild spaces. I’m a lifelong student of consciousness. Before this work, I spent 17 years as a professional cannabis grower. Forests, deserts, rivers — nature has always been my grounding force and my clearest teacher. It’s where I go to reset, reconnect, and listen. My curiosity has led me to explore altered states through plant medicines, fungi, synthetics, and traditional techniques. I study psychology, breathwork, harm reduction, and Buddhist philosophy — keeping one foot in science, one in mystery. My focus was on soil biology, entomology, and the subtle, complex relationships between plant, environment, and user. That hands-on experience continues to shape how I support clients exploring intentional cannabis use today. My favorite band is Tool. My favorite flower is cannabis. My favorite quote is.. "Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration — we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There’s no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we’re the imagination of ourselves." — Bill Hicks It’s a plant I’ve worked with, studied, and respected for years — not just for its complexity and therapeutic potential, but for the way it invites a deeper relationship with self, sensation, and intention. My approach has always been rooted in curiosity, reverence, and respect for both its power and its nuance. Plus, she’s gorgeous. Mindfulness Integration Practices Stabilizing insight through embodied awareness. We help clients incorporate breathwork, meditation, and other mindfulness-based practices into their personal integration process. These tools can enhance emotional regulation, deepen reflection, and support nervous system balance before and after non-ordinary state experiences. Sessions may include personalized routines, somatic awareness techniques, and practical strategies for cultivating presence in daily life. Retreat Planning Support Safe journeys begin with informed choices. We assist clients in identifying legally operating, ethically run retreat centers for psychedelic experiences abroad. This includes helping vet programs for safety, transparency, and alignment with client intentions. We also provide structured preparation for travel and support integration upon return — ensuring continuity and reflection before and after the retreat. Integration Support Making meaning after the experience. We offer space and structure for clients to reflect on and process their experiences. Integration sessions focus on identifying emotional themes, personal insights, and future intentions — turning powerful moments into lasting transformation through thoughtful dialogue, goal setting, and support. Harm Reduction Education Knowledge is the first layer of safety. Clients receive evidence-based information on safer practices related to cannabis, psychedelics, ketamine, and microdosing. Topics include managing risks, understanding interactions, preparing for challenging experiences, and creating safe environments (set and setting). Emergency preparedness strategies are also discussed when appropriate. Substance Use Wellness Planning Conscious use, aligned with your values. We support individuals who want to explore mindful and intentional relationships with substances like cannabis or explore microdosing. This may include evaluating use patterns, setting wellness-based goals (such as improving sleep, creativity, or emotional regulation), and applying mindfulness-based harm reduction frameworks to support clarity and self-awareness.

Esta es una planta hermosa y de colores brillantes que continúa prosperando en las condiciones más duras del desierto, mostrando un nivel de resiliencia que las personas con traumas y problemas de salud mental a menudo no pueden. mostrar (sin darse cuenta). Paperflower Psychiatry, LLC was launched in October 2020. Maria had been previously working at a community mental health agency and attempted to make negotiations to match the income of her male nurse practitioner coworker. Negotiations went south, human resources and the chief financial officer laughed at her request. She was already distraught at being burnt out from seeing a huge amount of patients in a short period of time. She was tired of being treated poorly by leadership, and not being able to advocate or create quality care for her patients. She was disgusted by case workers and intake specialists who were actively transphobic and homophobic, refusing to use patient's pronouns and chosen names. She was done with being looked at as a cash cow to make money for people who gave no fucks about the patients. At this point, she said "fuck it" and quit on the spot. If places like that could be corrupt as fuck and thrive, what would hold us back from having a practice that could be better? That could provide better quality care. That could OPENLY support the LGBTQIA+ population and fight health disparities. That could only hire on providers who give a fuck. That could put access to care before money. She registered for an LLC, designed her own website and started the practice that very weekend. Since then, we've just been growing. anti-fascist & secular since 2020. we were born in resistance to the current healthcare system prioritizing capitalism. every single person on our team votes for your right to choose, love, exist and be included in our society. we remain opposed to the current administration. we stand against nazis like elon musk who threaten the livelihood of LGBTQIA+ folx, the jewish community and POC. we stand against the system that erases the existence of trans folx. we stand against RFK for villainizing vaccines and life saving medications. we stand against trump for dismantling the system that offers fair education and rights to special needs children, and the ability to advance ourselves for those of us who can't afford higher education. we stand against the system that favors billionaires, leaving the rest of us without adequate resources or healthcare. we will continue to stand in solidarity with you. we have made some support guides for navigating your safety in the administration here.

Paperflower Psychiatry is a holistic and inclusive psychiatric practice specializing in evaluations and medication for children, adolescents, peripartum and adults in Arizona. Telehealth + offices in Tempe, North PHX + Flagstaff. Self booking is available online. What is ketamine therapy? Ketamine therapy is a treatment that uses low doses of ketamine to help with conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain. It's like a mental reset button, but instead of a computer, you're rebooting your brain—administered via IV infusions, injections, nasal spray, or lozenges in a carefully monitored setting. How does ketamine work for mental health? Ketamine works on your brain in two ways: chemically (like a brain architect) and experientially (like a mind-bending escape room). Chemically: It tinkers with glutamate, a neurotransmitter that helps with mood regulation and neuroplasticity. Translation: it rewires your brain to feel better. Experientially: Ketamine offers a temporary detachment from your thoughts and emotions, making it easier to confront trauma and bust through negative thought loops. Add therapy into the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for mental rejuvenation that’s part science, part magic. What conditions does ketamine treat? Ketamine is a versatile hero, tackling a range of issues, including: Severe depression (Research has found that ketamine can quickly relieve depression in people who do not respond well to other treatment.) Severe anxiety disorder (Research into the use of ketamine for anxiety is scarce, but there is evidence that it has fast-acting, anxiety-relieving effects.) Suicidal ideation Severe PTSD Severe bipolar disorders Drug addiction rehabilitation How is ketamine therapy administered? IV Infusion (most common) – Delivered via an intravenous drip over 40-60 minutes (a slow ride to bliss). Intramuscular (IM) Injection – A quick shot, with effects lasting for hours (kind of like a brief, but profound journey). Nasal Spray (Spravato/esketamine) – FDA-approved for depression and administered in a clinic. Sublingual Lozenges – A DIY trip at home, under the watchful eye of your doc. (We’re currently serving IM treatments at PaperFlower Psychiatry, in partnership with Your Shine Psychology, using an Active Engagement therapeutic model.) How fast does ketamine therapy work? Many people feel relief within hours to days of their first session, though the true magic often unfolds over multiple treatments. It’s like planting a garden—the flowers bloom with time. How many sessions are needed? A typical protocol includes: Induction phase: 6 sessions in 2-3 weeks (get ready for the brain upgrade). Maintenance phase: Booster sessions as needed—usually monthly or bi-monthly. But don’t worry, your provider will help you customize the perfect plan. How long do the effects last? Antidepressant effects can last anywhere from days to months. Some patients opt for periodic boosters to keep the good vibes going. What does ketamine therapy feel like? Expect a dissociative experience. You might feel detached from your body or thoughts, experience time distortion, or encounter visual distortions. It’s often compared to lucid dreaming—but with an emotional makeover. IM ketamine typically peaks in intensity 15–45 minutes after injection and can leave you feeling a bit “out there” for a few hours. Is ketamine therapy safe? When managed by professionals, ketamine therapy is generally safe. Side effects are typically mild, including dizziness, nausea, or temporary dissociation. Think of it like a brief detour from reality, not a freefall into chaos. Who should NOT use ketamine therapy? If you’ve got one of these, ketamine might not be your best bet: Uncontrolled high blood pressure A history of substance abuse Schizophrenia or psychosis Certain heart conditions Is ketamine therapy covered by insurance? Most insurance companies don’t cover IV or IM ketamine therapy, but Spravato (esketamine) is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression and sometimes covered. We're not offering it yet, but we’re working on it! How do I find a reputable ketamine clinic? You’re in the right place! If PaperFlower isn’t your thing, look for a clinic with licensed professionals, glowing reviews, and a clear treatment protocol that includes a psychological component. Trust us, a therapeutic approach is key to unlocking ketamine’s full potential. I can buy ketamine from a friend—it’s way cheaper. Why shouldn’t I? You could buy illicit ketamine from a friend, but it’s like buying a knockoff purse from a sketchy street vendor—no guarantee of quality or safety. Therapeutic ketamine is professionally administered, carefully dosed, and medically supervised. So, unless you’re a fan of bladder issues or unexpected mental health surprises, stick with the pros. Is ketamine a psychedelic? Ketamine is more of a dissociative anesthetic with psychedelic-ish effects. It’s not like classic psychedelics (LSD or psilocybin), which can be a mind-bending rollercoaster. Ketamine offers a more controlled experience, with shorter duration and a different brain chemistry twist. It’s the cool cousin of the psychedelic family.
